About the Opportunity
Join GovSkills at an exciting inflection point as we prepare to launch our MVP and onboard our first customers. This internship with GovSkills offers hands-on experience building real features, fixing real bugs, and responding to real user feedback in a fast-paced startup environment.
You'll work directly with our product, engineering and design teams to complete final MVP development, support the initial launch, and help iterate on the product based on early customer feedback.

GovSkills is a civic technology platform that helps people navigate and land public-sector jobs by translating complex government job postings into plain language and matching job seekers to roles based on their skills, not just keywords. Our mission is to make government hiring more accessible, transparent, and human by helping job seekers find roles where they can truly thrive.
Project Overview
Timeline: Spring Semester, January-May 2026
Pre-Launch (2 months): Complete remaining MVP features, conduct testing, and prepare for production deployment
Launch Support (1 month): Monitor system performance, triage and fix bugs, support customer onboarding
Iteration Phase (2 months): Implement improvements based on customer feedback, optimize existing features
What You'll Work On
- Build and refine user-facing features for the GovSkills web application
- Debug and resolve issues identified during testing and early customer use
- Implement UI/UX improvements based on user feedback
- Contribute to data pipelines and backend services supporting core functionality
- Participate in code reviews and collaborative problem-solving sessions
- Attend daily standups, sprint planning, and retrospectives
Who You Are
- Currently pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field (current junior/senior)
- Enthusiastic about civic technology and making government data more accessible
- Comfortable with ambiguity and eager to learn in a dynamic startup environment
- Collaborative team player who communicates clearly and asks good questions
- Detail-oriented with a commitment to writing clean, maintainable code

Technical Experience We're Looking For
Required:
- Coursework or project experience centered around web application development
- One of the following:
- Familiarity with at least one front-end framework like React, Svelte, or similar.
- Familiarity with authoring backend services using Python or Node.js.
- Basic understanding of version control with Git
- Ability to read and debug existing codebases
Nice to Have:
- Advanced coursework in Machine Learning or Data Science
- Familiarity with Docker and containerization
- Experience using cloud infrastructure
- Contributions to open source projects or personal GitHub portfolio
